The next day we went to the "Wailua Falls." In ancient times men would jump off these falls to prove their manhood, which was usually left on the rocks below. It's 173 feet of solid drop! That's actually taller then Niagara Falls but the latter has a bit more water. You can hike down to the falls even though there are signs all over the place. The trail is past the guard rail. It's slippery and muddy and about a 45 degree angle. Maybe if we were younger and it was summer we might have done it! You have to be really careful there is Leptospirosis in a lot of the fresh waters in Hawaii (not the ocean.) It's a bacteria from animal urine and can enter the body through open cuts or your eyes. Over 100 people in Hawaii get the bacteria every year. It can be treated if caught early, but if not can be fatal.
